We live in an age where mobile technology like smart phones and tablets have become more widely used and more popular than computers. Many people solely rely on their smartphones for online shopping, social media usage, and for communication. Because of that, mobile technology offers many advantages over traditional marketing channels. As marketers we can use these mobile technologies to create personalized marketing messages based on users’ purchasing history, their browsing history and their digital footprint. This information helps us to better understand users’ wants and needs and enact a marketing campaign that appeals to them. This messaging strategy is also, typically, more cost effective than traditional marketing methods like TV or radio broadcasting, direct mail or event marketing because the production costs are lower, the cost of mobile marketing campaigns like push notifications or SMS messaging is a fraction of the cost of printing and ad space. Mobile marketing methods also provide the benefits of data tracking, real-time analytics and engagement with the audience.
Accessibility is one way that mobile marketing helps to increase product sales and awareness. Smartphone users check their phones roughly 200 times per day (Bazen, 2023), brands can use push notifications, SMS messaging, social media or gaming ads to get the attention of the audience throughout the day. Mobile marketing methods often use geofencing for targeted promotions, when a user is within a certain proximity stores can notify a customer of their location or promote a product or sale via notifications. They also provide direct shopping links for e-commerce purchases or in-app purchasing options; this increases both brand awareness and the likelihood of a sale. Mobile marketing also encourages dialogue-marketing which is a two-way exchange of information (Dialogue, 2022). When users provide personal information to a brand by signing up for email notifications or placing online orders, the brand uses that information to send newsletters or product information back to the customer. Some even enroll the users into a loyalty program which can include reward programs, birthday gifts, or discounts.
Mobile marketing has many benefits, but it also has constraints, data protection and legal compliance is one (Ray, 2025). A strategy to combat any concerns is to ensure transparency over data protection and usage, encrypting private data and implementing an ‘opt-in’ function for users to consent to data tracking. When users are aware of how their data is being used and notified of security measures to protect their personal information, they’re more likely to submit their data. Another constraint that affects mobile marketing is competition. With the increase in smartphone and tablet usage also comes an increase in market saturation, millions of brands are actively trying to gain the attention of users, it’s imperative to build a strategy that stands out among others. To combat the competition, make sure you’re targeting the right audience, you’re focusing on the right channels discovering ways to stand out from similar brands.
